“I've heard it can get kind of hot here,” I said to the search committee. They looked at each other uncomfortably, remembering my upbringing in the mild summers of the Pacific Northwest. “It's not too bad.” We sweltered through my visit the first week of June. “This is unusual,” the committee assured me. I returned the last week of July, driving into town with the temperature 85 degrees-at 11 p.m.! And they said it again as the heat index rose to 110 the next day: “This is exceptional. Sorry it's so hot for you.” It's okay, friends. I've come to accept it now. There is nothing unusual about it: It gets really hot here in the summer. I dare say the annual sweat-fest that is July and August here makes me think fondly of those first wonderful weeks in this congregation four years ago, and re-kindles in me anticipation and joy for all God is doing in this sweltering community and beyond. The heat also has me reflecting on the way God moves in and through us as a community. I spoke with two friends who separately had recent experiences with Native American Christian sweat lodge ceremonies. In a darkened, low-roofed tent, stones are taken directly from a fire and brought in to the center of the lodge. Water is periodically added, producing a consuming, nearly unbearable steam. And for as long as three hours, the group is led in prayers (chanted, spoken and sung), meditation, sharing of hopes and pains, and silence. Stone after stone is brought in-one friend said that the heat was so oppressive and intense that he genuinely wasn't sure he would survive. But these friends do not regret the experience. On the contrary, something about the heat left them feeling cleansed, pushed beyond what they had thought possible, renewed and ready for the world. With every sweat gland taxed, their defense mechanisms compromised, their comfort zone invaded, they were open to the movement of God's Spirit in a most encompassing and powerful way. They returned with bodies steaming in the cool high desert air, genuinely different in their relationship with God, each other, and the world. We may feel at times this summer like we're in a sweat lodge. If so, let's take it as an opportunity to spend these days being challenged and pressed to grow with God. And then this fall-returning from vacations to work, school and even the routine of the full church schedule-may our bodies steam, emanating the love and grace of a God who desires that divine holiness and transformation would seep out of our every pore. The Lord be with you, Brian |

New File Helps Connect People with Jobs
Something new has been added. It's an FYI file available to anyone who wishes to take advantage of it. Networking is important whether looking for a job or hiring. The file-marked “FYI”- is located in the hallway with the church mail files. It is a place to put your resume or your help wanted information if you have a position to fill. Gashland Presbyterian Church has a similar system on their website and it has had good results. Check out www.gashland.org/joblink.htm . |

Food Pantry Sunday - August 3
Last month we noticed a large increase in the number of children in the households being served. This would seem to indicate a greater need in families when children are not receiving reduced-cost or free school lunches. This month we need pancake mix, syrup, hamburger helper and canned meats. As always cash |

Notes of Thanks
Dear Parkville Presbyterian Church, Note: Becky Capps was our 2001-02 seminary intern. She graduated in May from Princeton Theological Seminary. I want to thank my Church family for all of the cards, calls, prayers and encouragement the past several months. After many hospital stays and tests, there is still no diagnosis for the internal bleeding. I received a pace-maker June 11, and except for the medication I am doing well. Again I want to thank everyone for their concern and support. A special thank you to Pastors Brian and Matt. |

George S. Woodward - Our First Installed Pastor
George Woodward was born October 18, 1819, in Gardiner, Maine. After his graduation from Bowdoin College in 1844, he taught school at Winchester, Pennsylvania, and there became a theology student of Dr. John Crowell. He came west as a missionary of the American Home Missionary Society and was ordained by the New School Presbytery of Missouri in 1849. In April of that year, he was sent to Weston, but he also began preaching at Parkville and soon concluded that he was most needed here. Organized four years earlier, the church no longer had anyone to preach and only three members remained. Although he continued to preach part-time in Weston, in November, he and his wife Cordelia moved to Parkville. |
